It’s monumentally perturbing that most of our “food” is contaminated with oxidized oils and copious amounts of sugar. According to this infograph the average child in the US eats 32 teaspoons of sugar per day, more than the average adult at 22 teaspoons per day. Americans now get 20% of their daily calories from a toxic source – soybean oil.

Now I want to tell you about my friend C’s childhood. She was one of those kids eating 32 teaspoons of sugar a day, alongside a hearty helping of soybean oil. Her idea of a good time was stuffing her face with fruit rollups and dunkaroos and then loading up a plate with nacho chips and orange cheese and sticking it in the microwave.

The saddest part is that she was just a kid, and had no idea that she was setting herself up for a life of addiction. And don’t go rolling your eyes and thinking I’m just exaggerating. The studies are there to show that sugar is an addictive substance just like cocaine. In fact, brain scans show it lights up the same areas of the brain.

Cheese and gluten also engage the brain’s opioid receptors and make us hungry for more. You can read more about how gluten affects the brain here.

So, America, your “War on Drugs” should probably start looking at the villainous food industry alongside the drug cartels. Imagine Colonel Sanders in jail with those guys!

My friend was overweight, depressed and disillusioned by the ripe old age of 10. She sat around all day watching shitty TV and had the motivation of a sloth in school. And then by some miracle she got a job at a health food store. As she saw and worked with people who actively cared about their health, she started to question her own choices. And yes there’s a happy ending, because she ditched the crap food and broke those addictions.

What happened after she let go of the refined sugars and oils? She felt normal for one. Her hormones balanced out and she stopped struggling with depression and anxiety. She lost weight and her skin cleared up. She had the energy to want to exercise. All in all, her entire life changed. Just like mine has, just like yours can too.

Understanding Chronic Inflammation and How It Will Ruin You

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to trauma. It’s essential for the healing process as it signals your white blood cells to take action. This is acute inflammation and it is normal and necessary.

Chronic inflammation is a different story. When inflammation becomes chronic your entire body suffers. Your mind suffers. Your productivity and motivation suffer. And chronic inflammation is affecting every single one of those people eating 22 teaspoons of sugar a day and a gallon of soybean oil a month.

Because it’s our environment which causes chronic inflammation, meaning your food choices, the water you drink, the air you breathe. Sugar and refined vegetable oils are the number one culprits. They are basically telling your body to prepare your immune system for impending doom.

All of this weakens the immune response over time. The inflammatory response goes from being directed to a certain area, to affecting the whole body, including your brain.

What studies show about sugar and brain function is that even a small can of coke before a test negatively affected scores. Pure refined sugar is your brain’s worst nightmare, which is a surprise to many since the brain requires glucose.

The reason refined vegetable oils contribute to chronic inflammation is they are high in PUFA’s, trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids.

A simple way to explain is PUFA’s (polyunsaturated fatty acids) are fats that aren’t chemically stable. Meaning they are VERY sensitive to going rancid and becoming carcinogenic from heat, light and commercial processing methods. The average diet is rich in PUFA’s.

Trans fats are those nasty cancer causing compounds that were once upon a time lumped into the same group as saturated fat. They’re caused by taking an oil and processing it to death.

Omega-6 fatty acids are an essential fat that your body requires. They are supposed to be in relative balance with the amount of omega-3 fats we consume since one is inflammatory and the other is not. Current research shows most people consume up to twenty times more omega-6 than they do omega-3 fatty acids.

When you remove these inflammatory compounds from your life you experience what my friend experienced. Freedom to thrive and be fully human for one. Every ailment there is will be improved by reducing chronic inflammation.

New breakthroughs are uncovering that depression is an inflammatory response. This is huge. Nearly 1 in 10 Americans is affected by depression at some point.

Digestive issues, arthritis, heart disease, obesity, skin problems, and cancer – they all thrive in an environment with out of control levels of inflammation.

Breaking the Addictions

When you think of addiction you probably think of a junkie shooting up in a back alley somewhere. But you must know us humans can get addicted to just about anything. Just flick on that show Hoarders and watch as 20 cats spill out from underneath someone’s mountain of junk. They are obviously struggling with addiction to stuff.

I’m addicted to Game of Thrones. I think about it while I fall asleep at night and I never miss an episode.

Some addictions are harmless, while others are debilitating. The addiction to sugar is something most straight edge folks would consider harmless. Little Suzy deserves her ice cream after school. I deserve to treat myself to this double decker bacon burger with a side of fudge. That’s what we tell ourselves.

Sugar is biologically addictive. You wouldn’t say Suzy deserves her smack after school. I deserve a line of cocaine after a hard day of work. You wouldn’t on purpose give your kids food you knew would rob their ability to focus. You wouldn’t purposefully do that to yourself either.

What you deserve is to understand that sugar and refined carbs are stealing your vitality. Just like they did my friends. You deserve to feel healthy. And the only way to do that is to ditch the sugar – today. Check out this sugar detox program and stop making excuses.

Be a Shining Light and Guide Others By Your Example

When my friend hangs out with others they sometimes ask her how she has the energy to run a business, raise a family, stay fit and eat well. All she tells them is ‘you are what you eat’ (and what you think, but that’s another topic).

My friends whole family eventually changed their lifestyle habits. They ditched the stashes of dunkaroos and tubs of margarine. They cleaned up and got healthy and stayed that way. That’s what happens when you shift your lifestyle instead of just going on another bullshit diet.

Eat real food and you’ll get real results. When you take action and responsibility for your own happiness and success, people notice.

By ditching toxic addictive foods you create so much freedom in your own life. And freedom is contagious. Your friends and family will want to know what you’re doing and you can spread the gift of health to them.
